Almost all the big Android device makers are currently working on 5-inch phablets with 1080p Full HD touchscreens. However, ZTE has been developing not one, but two different such creatures.
The first one, the Nubia Z5, has been officially announced yesterday, and it comes with impressive design and an incredibly thin frame, so far claiming the title of ‘thinnest 5″ 1080p device out there’. But that won’t last very long, thanks to ZTE’s other phablet – the Grand S.

The ZTE Grand S is set to be unveiled during CES next month, and it will be just 6.9 mm thin. That while still coming with a 5″ 1920×1080 touchscreen and a 13 MP rear camera. These details have been made available to the Chinese media by ZTE itself. No other specs have been officially confirmed, but the ZTE Grand S has been widely rumored to come with a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (APQ8064) processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a 2,500 mAh battery. Except for the battery capacity (which is 500 mAh less), those specs are identical to the Nubia Z5′s. The lower-capacity battery is somewhat understandable considering how insanely thin the Grand S is going to be though.
It’s also rumored to be built out of some kind of ceramic material, but we’ll only be sure if that’s true on January 8, when it’s going to be officially introduced in Las Vegas.
It’s pretty clear that the ZTE Grand S will then be the thinnest 5-inch phablet with a 1080p screen, and it may even hold on to that title for quite a while, considering how far it is from its competitors in this regard.
The Grand S could be priced at 2,799 yuan according to some rumors circulating in China. That’s about $449 or €340 at today’s exchange rates. If this turns out to be true, it will be significantly cheaper than the Nubia Z5, which is going to cost the rough equivalent of $555.
